G2YTA-Design and Development of Enhanced Software Defined Networks for Security
The increase in the bandwidth, the emergence of new services and the tremendously increasing data traffic increase the importance of the Future Internet concept which should be implemented without delay. In parallel, problems such as the fact that the existing infrastructure serving today's internet is insufficient for mobile internet and cannot meet the required service quality, undermines the user experience and prevents the creation of innovative services. In the light of these facts, the Future Internet aims to support new technologies such as mobile devices, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and the Internet of Things. Software-based solutions that can work in different network layers and provide inter-layer cooperation are the communication technologies that will provide the Future Internet. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is one of the key concepts that need to be examined and investigated in the transition to these technologies. These technologies have begun to be developed, but highly secure and scalable networks have not yet been established. Innovative approaches and solutions are needed to ensure the security of these new technologies within the scope of the Future Internet. In addition, complex and large-scale attacks threaten data security and accessibility, making privacy and integrity more difficult to maintain. In this project, we plan to carry out research studies and implement them for new solutions, methods and approaches in order to increase the safety of SDN in line with the internet of the future. In this project, we plan to design and develop new solutions, methods and approaches in order to increase the security of SDN in line with the Future Internet.
In our project, cost-effective and security-strengthened SDN architectures and systems will be developed to solve these problems. Therefore, the focus will be on identifying / modeling structural security vulnerabilities and developing innovative solutions for these vulnerabilities. The developed solutions will be tested not only by simulation but also by applying them in real/near-real environment. In our project, besides the security of SDN architectures, additional studies that will contribute to data security of SDN components will be conducted.
SDN is a new and widespread network technology where data and control planes are separated. In the SDN, switching devices with simpler hardware features are used instead of routers that can handle a lot of functions and centralized management is provided. This architecture provides flexibility, reduces costs due to simpler device usage, simplifies renewal and modification with central management, and makes changes on not hardware but software. However, the distributed and partitioned structure of the network emerges new challenges in terms of durability, scalability, communication delays, manager deployment and security. In this context, although many studies have been done on other issues, the security part is slowly developed. For this reason, it has high importance to identify / model structural security vulnerabilities of SDN, which are seen as the network architecture of the future, develop solutions for these vulnerabilities and test these solutions by applying them.
